Okkul Eyewear: Mystical, Handcrafted Frames from Budapest
Okkul is a Hungarian eyewear brand born from Zsanett Fábián and Szabolcs Major's shared passion for distinctive, extraordinary frames. During a trip to Camden Town in London in 2016, Zsanett first encountered beautifully handcrafted frames, an encounter that profoundly impacted her. In 2020, amidst the lockdown, she ordered a jeweller's saw and a sheet of acetate, and began designing and cutting frames herself. Without formal training in this craft in Hungary, she had to learn everything from scratch; her very first frame, the 'Brynn', was a little crooked and uneven, but it firmly established Okkul's unique path. Szabolcs, who had been collecting exceptional eyewear for years, then fully committed to the project, taking charge of sales and distribution. Thus, what began as frames for personal use grew into a fully-fledged, family-run business crafted in the heart of Budapest.
Each Okkul frame is entirely handcrafted – from precision cutting to gluing and the final finish – using acetate derived from natural, reusable cellulose sourced within the EU. This not only makes the frames kind to the skin but also ensures they are part of a consciously sustainable, entirely Hungarian production method. Every piece is numbered, underscoring its rarity.
Okkul's design language is steeped in mysticism: whispered secrets, séances and tarot cards, forgotten deities, ancient idols and symbols – sometimes visible in a name, sometimes hidden within an ornament, but always carrying a concealed meaning. Much like secret societies, Okkul is both conspicuous and, at the same time, cryptic and personal.
